The latest versions of Microsoft Word from 2007 and upwards by default saves documents in .docx format, previous versions 97 – 2003 files, use the old .doc format. When you open an old .doc Word document, Compatibility Mode is automatically turned on, and you’ll see Compatibility Mode in the title bar of the window.
You can easily convert the old .doc format to the new format, which will allow you to use all the new and improved features. To do this click on the File tab, (or the office button) Choose Info and you will see the Convert Option at the top of your screen – you’ll also see a warning which says “Some new features are disabled to prevent problems when working with previous versions of Office. Converting this file will enable these features, but may result in layout changes.”
If you have a complex document you may prefer to use the Save As option, as then you will have a copy of both versions – better safe than sorry!
Click on the Convert button and your Word document will be converted and all the new and improved Word features will be available.
The main advantage of converting your old .doc files to the new format, is that the .docx file format supports the new features which are not available in the old .doc format. You’ll also, find that the file sizes of your .docx files are much smaller than the .doc format!
